Chela, the next rising electropop diva

Chela, who was raised in WA before moving to Melbourne with her family nine years ago, says she always knew she would be involved in the industry.

"I think I've always had that struggling creative inside of me,'' Chela, born Chelsea Wheatley, says. "You just know you are trapped for life. You need to create; you've got no other option. I have tried to do other things, but I've always written music.

''Even if I wasn't releasing anything or I wasn't out performing, I was always writing it alone in my bedroom and letting that creative energy flow. I think I would be unhappy if I was bottling it up inside.''

Chela, who has become a favourite on Triple J with her catchy electro pop tunes Guts, Full Moon and Plastic Gun and an in-demand singer featured on dance tracks by the likes of Clubfeet, Viceroy and Goldroom, says while she had long-held dreams to be a music producer she never imagined herself as a singer.

"I wasn't sure if I would ever be the one with the microphone,'' she says. "When I was 13 I wrote in my diary, 'I really want to be a music producer and produce music for other artists when I am older'.''

Her dad encouraged his musically minded daughter, teaching her how to create music on her computer before transferring it to cassette tapes. Chela says she soon "became obsessed'' with producing music.

"I wasn't sure if I could take it as a serious career or not, but I think it is kind of looking that way, which is great.''
