Menace premiered a new animated video 'I live With Your Ghost'

Napalm Death guitarist Mitch Harris has been up to some interesting stuff while not focusing on his gig with the grindcore legends. The new project Menace has been launched by the guitarist, and we’ve got the premiere of Menace’s new animated video for ‘I Live With Your Ghost.’

Menace was originally supposed to be a project comprised of Harris, Soulfly frontman Max Cavalera and Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor, but due to busy schedules, Mitch Harris chose to kick off the new act alone. “We all became incredibly busy and as a result new directives evolved, and to achieve my goal for Menace I needed to see the album through myself,” says Harris.

The metal veteran continues, “To me Menace is the old meeting the new; heavy and melodic, descriptive and adventurous, epic and futuristic, carnal and primitive, and so on. Menace brings unrealized dreams closer to fruition. It is about overcoming loss and hardship, and a combination of many interests including spiritual philosophy, psychology, science, physics, theatrics, the supernatural, the paranormal, film, poetry, photography, art, sculpture and video; the things I’ve focused all my energy on over the last twenty years. It’s an organic-meets-technological approach to exploration and self discovery through a direction I term audio-installationism (A.I.).”

Harris concludes, “Those familiar with my previous work will be in for a surprise and should expect the unexpected, but I’m a firm believer that even the most improbable dreams should be explored. Menace is a statement in itself, a way of saying that there is always a way forward, no matter how difficult it seems. If you are still alive, then there is still something to achieve.”

The space-themed video for ‘I Live With Your Ghost’ is awesome, showcasing the collision of two planets and the destruction and heartbreak which unfolds. You share each step with the main character (who reminds us a lot of Isaac from ‘Dead Space’), embarking on a journey as tripped-out as the song itself.
Check out the premiere of ‘I Live With Your Ghost’ in the video above. Menace’s debut album, ‘Impact Velocity,’ will come out March 18 via Season of Mist.

Tribute to Tony Sly, Songs about an iconic person in punk scene

Sly’s shocking, sudden death in August 2012 at 41 left a void in the punk scene that will never be filled again, least of all by a tribute album. His music inspired so many people from so many different sections of punk, the expectations for this record are almost impossibly high, to the point where it’d be unfair to judge its content in the context of a "traditional" tribute album. Still, as a tribute, The Songs of Tony Sly: A Tribute is a pretty fitting, and often arresting eulogy on behalf of a still-mourning scene.

Sly’s wide-ranging influence is immediately apparent as Karina Deniké’s sparsely haunting “A Biggest Lie” opens the compilation. By using little more than her voice, the former Dance Hall Crashers co-vocalist puts Sly’s lyrics at the absolute forefront of her interpretation, creating a hell of a table-setter in the process. It segues nicely into Mad Caddies’ airy rocksteady version of “AM,” too. Later on, Tim McIlrath of Rise Against and Jon Snodgrass team up for an acoustic take on “For Fiona,” McIlrath’s stark vocals complementing the more soulful, weathered voice of Snodgrass quite nicely. Frank Turner’s interpretation of “Keira” is smartly gaunt, as well; it sounds as if it was recorded roadside, with the faintness of cars whirring by accompanying Turner’s gentle voice and guitar. Brian Fallon of the Gaslight Anthem injects some harmonica into “Capo 4th Fret,” adding even more solemnity than his somber vocal take can provide. Alkaline Trio offer a Damnesia-style spin on “Straight From The Jacket,” with Matt Skiba’s commanding vocals and a powerful guitar solo at the forefront.

Elsewhere, Snuff’s Latin-fueled take on “On The Outside” is an awesome curveball, with infectious rhythms, busy percussion and abrasive horns. The goosebump-inducing, multi-part harmonies of Old Man Markley’s “Feel Good Song of the Year” are also a highlight. Dramatic strings accompany Swingin’ Utters’ rootsy version of “Not Your Savior” with positive results.

Even certain bands who influenced Sly and No Use For A Name pay tribute; Bad Religion’s version of “Let it Slide” is relatively straightforward, but hearing Greg Graffin respectfully croon Sly’s lyrics is a lot of fun. NOFX basically make “The Shortest Pier” their own while augmenting the anthemic nature of the original’s chorus.

Sly’s indelible impression on the enduring EpiFat sound is apparent in droves, too. Strung Out, whose rise on Fat Wreck Chords was concurrent with that of No Use For A Name, do their best impression on “Soulmate” while also injecting their own slightly heavier, harmonic-heavy sound into its backbone. Lagwagon’s cover of “Discomfort Inn” accomplishes much the same, with Joey Cape — one of Sly’s best friends and biggest boosters — sounding more invested than he has in years in this setting.

Lou Reed, The Godfather of Punk Rock died at 71

Lou Reed, the godfather of punk rock, died in New York on Sunday (October 27) at the age of 71. According to Rolling Stone, the hugely influential guitarist and songwriter best known for genre-defining hits such as "Rock & Roll," "Sweet Jane" and "Walk on the Wild Side," died of undisclosed causes, six months after undergoing a liver transplant in May.

Beginning with his work with the Velvet Underground in the late 1960s, Reed created a new blueprint for rock and roll, incorporating elements of avant garde music, dark poetry and subject matter that pushed the envelope for rock, including songs about sadomasochism and homosexuality.

Though VU were not huge sellers in their time, it was often said that everyone who bought one of the 30,000 copies initially sold of the band's 1967 debut, The Velvet Underground & Nico went on to form a band. In the subsequent years, everyone from David Bowie to Iggy Pop, the Pixies, Nirvana, the Cure, R.E.M., U2 and the Smashing Pumpkins have paid homage to Reed and his renegade style. And, it's fair to say, the road would have been even harder for Lady Gaga and Kanye West if Reed had not smashed down the musical barriers between music and art for them.

Lewis Allan Reed was born on March 2, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York, and gained his early education in music by listening to doo-wop and early rock and roll icons from the 1950s. After having marginal success after college, he hooked up with classically trained violist John Cale in the mid-sixties, forming the Velvet Underground with guitarist Sterling Morrison and drummer Maureen Tucker in 1964.

Legendary pop art provocateur Andy Warhol made the VU the house band of his studio, the Factory, as well as designing the iconic peeling banana cover of their debut album. The group set itself apart thanks to Reed's nihilistic lyrics and story songs full of drug and S&M references, which made some of the dark output from the Rolling Stones seem tame by comparison. Reed also helped bring the use of feedback and distortion to the fore for rock bands, inspiring countless bands to step out of the shackles of traditional melody and meter and explore noisier, more difficult territory.

The band's final album, 1970's Loaded, contained two of their most beloved songs, "Rock & Roll" and "Sweet Jane."

Green Day's documentary Cuatro will be released September 24

Green Day‘s documentary ‘¡Cuatro!’ will be released Sept. 24 on DVD and via iTunes.

The documentary, which chronicles the conceptualizing and recording of Green Day’s trilogy of albums ‘¡Uno!,’ ‘¡Dos!‘ and ‘¡Tré!’ will be available on DVD (pre-order at Amazon) and via iTunes, Amazon and Qello. It was directed by Tim Wheeler and produced by Tim Lynch.

Fans got a sneak preview of the film late last year with a highlight show that aired on VH, MTV2 and Palladia, and now can see the entire thing.

“Over the last year while we were recording our trilogy, we posted multiple clips every week so fans can see parts of the recording process of ‘¡Uno!,’ ‘¡Dos!’ and ¡Tré!,” said bassist Mike Dirnt. “‘¡Cuatro!’ brings our fans one step closer by giving them even more access and revealing what it was like for us to make these records.”

It has been about a year since frontman Billie Joe Armstrong’s now infamous rant at the 2012 iHeart Radio Festival and subsequent trip to rehab. In a recent interview Dirnt says the band is now in a good place. “It’s pretty awesome right now,” Dirnt shares. “Before it was tense … it was chaos [touring the world after] coming right out of recording ['Uno,' 'Dos' and 'Tre']. Now we’ve had time to let the dust settle and get our s–t together, we’re ready to tour and play. [But] we’re going to take some breaks in between so we don’t kill ourselves.”

Dead Dog's new album called Precious Child

Precious Child is Dead Dog's third album, although it's the first one I've heard from this Athens, GA-based trio. The band could best be described as a blend of fuzzed up pop-punk put through a shredder to add some sharp edges. All this added to a distinctly loose and freewheeling lo-fi approach provides for an enjoyable eight tracks.

There's certainly no messing around with the songs here, with only one breaking the three-minute mark; it's a case of get going, throw in some catchy hooks, have some sing-along lyrics primarily provided by Ella Sternberg (who also wields a nifty bass guitar) and basically end the song. As Alexander the Meerkat (go Google it) would say, 'Simples!'

That longest track, "Hold Me Tight," is a true gem which grabs your vocal chords and leaves you with no option but to join in with Sternberg. It's not the only song here that does that but it's the best of the bunch and the first one you should head to.

The album is all tied up with a cover of a Ramones track and here is the pleasant surprise: it's not one of the more favoured choices of bands when ploughing through a substantial back catalogue to choose from. "Danny Says" is given a whole new feel without it sounding as if it's been ripped to pieces and put back together as a totally different beast. The end result is strong enough not to annoy fervent Ramones geeks out there but also doesn't come across as filler, either.

Suicidal Tendencies released '13' featured Cyco Style video

Suicidal Tendencies are back with their first new album in 13 years and as a result have decided to call the disc ’13′ (which just so happens to be the name of the new Black Sabbath album, as well). The group recently polished off the forthcoming effort with the band’s own Mike Muir co-producing the disc with Paul Northfield. In addition, fans can now get their first taste of new music courtesy of the newly released video for the single ‘Cyco Style.’

The current Suicidal Tendencies lineup consists of Muir on vocals, Dean Pleasants on lead guitar, Nico Santora on rhythm guitar, Steve Bruner on bass and Eric Moore on drums.

The release of ‘13,’ due March 26, promises to be part of a very big year for the group as the band is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Keeping true to the ’13′ theme, the album has 13 tracks on it, including ‘Cyco Style’ which is the lead single. The energetic video for the track, which mostly consists of live footage, can be seen below.

The ’13′ album also features a handful of special guests. Metal Mulisha’s Larry Linkogle and Jimmy Fitzpatrick turn up on ‘Smash It!,’ while pro skaters Danny Way, Tony Trujillo, Steve and Alex Olson, Vincent Alvarez, Elijah Berle and Jim ‘Red Dog’ Muir all lend a hand on ‘Show Some Love … Tear It Down.’

Frontman Mike Muir states, “First, thank you for all the people that have patiently waited for this record. Now I will shut up and let the music do the talking.” Speaking of which, fans can check out the music when Suicidal Tendencies hits the road this spring. After a private South by Southwest performance this week and the Cyco Family Weekend with Infectious Grooves in early April, the band will officially launch their ‘Slam City Tour’ with Madball, Sick of It All, D.R.I. and Wake the Dead April 11 in San Francisco.

Iggy and The Stooges 'Ready to Die album tells its story

Still, with the Stooges' legacy somewhat tarnished, and with people's expectations set so low, Iggy and The Stooges' follow-up Ready to Die succeeds both because no one really expected much and because, quite simply, it's a tighter album. With six years to reflect, the fact of the matter is 2007's Stooges comeback album The Weirdness really wasn't that bad. While it certainly did not rise to the phenomenal heights of The Stooges, Fun House or Raw Power, saying that it fell short of those albums is basically saying that The Weirdness was not one of the absolute greatest albums ever made.

With James Williamson back on guitar for the first time since Raw Power, the band rip through ten compact songs. For the most part, the songs are based in three-chord, driving riffs. Founding Stooge Ron Asheton passed away after The Weirdness and just like the transition between Fun House and Raw Power, the difference in guitar is palpable.

Iggy turns in a respectable, but not fiery performance. For the most part, he relies on a sort of sing-talking as opposed to the blues howl heard back during the band's original run.

Lyrics are a combination of the written word and delivery. When Iggy screamed "I feel alright!" in his anguished wail, it said more than even the most profound Propaghandi essay. But here, for the most part, his delivery lacks fire and is overbearingly direct. On "DDs" when he says "I'm on my knees for those double Ds", he doesn't sound like a coyote on a man's flesh, he sounds like a pervert.

It feels like the most honest parts on the entire record and also, between Iggy's melancholy delivery and his restrained voice, is as profound as the berserker yelps on the group's earlier releases. Really, this is the kind of thing that made Johnny Cash so famous in his final decade.

Ready to Die is actually a pretty good, satisfying proto-punk rock album. And then, every so often, it rises to amazing heights.

Dropkick Murphy's released a charity EP to benefit Boston bombing victims

Boston's Dropkick Murphys have released a charity EP to benefit victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. The single includes an updated version of their song "Rose Tattoo" with contributions from Bruce Springsteen, along with live, acoustic recordings of "Don't Tear Us Apart" and "Jimmy Collins's Wake."

It's available exclusively through iTunes for the special price of $1.29. Everyone involved has agreed to donate 100% of the money raised through this release.

The band's most recent record, Signed and Sealed in Blood, was released earlier this year.

For founder, bassist and singer Ken Casey, these songs aim "to tell you a life story in four minutes." The Dropkick Murphys will release a new album, Signed and Sealed in Blood, next week, and its single "Rose Tattoo" was inspired by Casey's own tattoos.

"Throughout life — trials, tribulations, dates, times, places, things that are important to you, family, people who have passed away — tattoos on my body document my life and what I've been through, things that have been important to me," Casey tells NPR's Audie Cornish. "You know, they're all a part of the story."

The Transplants new album called 'In A Warzone'

American dub-punk band The Transplants are finally back with a ferocious new album called In A Warzone, which hits the street this June 25th via Epitaph records.

“When we started this band 13 years ago, we weren’t worried about who was going to like us,” states front-man Rob Aston. “We still aren’t. In A Warzone is more raw and stripped down than our previous releases. In my opinion, it’s our best album. It’s always been difficult to classify Transplants. But at the end of the day, we’re a punk rock band. We make whatever type of music we want.”

To mark the record's announcement, the notorious band - which features Tim Armstrong (Operation Ivy, Rancid) Travis Barker (Blink 182) and “Skinhead Rob” Aston - will offer fans a free download of the record's title track “In The Warzone” which sets the tone out the gate with raging vocals from Aston, guitar and vocals from Armstrong and a super charged hardcore beat from Barker.

The Transplants will be taking their incendiary live show on the road for a North American tour opening for Rancid beginning on June 11th. Tim Armstrong will playing with BOTH BANDS.

Pennywise will released their box sets

Pennywise has announced to coincide with their 25th anniversary, they will be releasing a box set containing never-before heard music, and will begin work on a new album towards the end of this year, which will be their first with Jim Lindberg on vocals since 2008′s Reason to Believe.

According to an interview by guitarist Fletcher Dragge with The Music:
Our first order of business is trying to put together a cool box set to celebrate our 25th anniversary as a band. It's going to be really comprehensive and has a bunch of songs that didn't make past albums as well as outtakes and randomly recorded stuff that we think is cool as well other stuff that's never been heard. The box set is [also] going to include two or three brand new songs. The band is obviously in a good place at the moment so we want to take advantage of that. Once those tracks have been done we're going to start working on a brand new Pennywise album towards the end of this year. Things are now moving pretty fast for us so we hope all our fans stick with us and get ready for some great stuff in the future.
They released All or Nothing in 2012.

Pennywise’s latest album, All or Nothing, was released last May on Epitaph Records and is, so far, their only recording with Zoli Teglas from Ignite. After the release of that album, Jim Lindberg (who left the band back in 2009) finally rejoined Pennywise after Zoli’s departure.

Bouncing Souls 'The Greenball Crew' EP reissued in vinyl

May 20, 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of The Bouncing Souls first self-released CD The Greenball Crew EP as well as Chunksaah Records birth. The original release was only 1,000 CDs and was out of print within the year.

To celebrate their two-decades anniversary, the EP will be re-issued for the first time, redesigned and remastered for a vinyl-only release. It will be available for pre-order and only pressed for the amount of pre-orders received with sales closing on May 20, 2013. Pre-orders are available now at Chunksaah.

In addition to this, The Good, the Bad, and the Argyle and Maniacal Laughter are also being re-issued on a limited vinyl on Chunksaah. Details of those re-issues will be forthcoming shortly.

Bryan Kienlen shared his thought about reissued EP

"The Greenball Crew EP is a lot of things, but mostly it's a snapshot of four guys learning how to play music. To be fair, this collection of songs does have its moments, but we've generally regarded it as a real turd. But there's no accounting for taste and if anyone genuinely digs it, then more power to 'em. In addition to blindly feeling around in the dark for how to write songs, it was a real learning experience in the whole process of recording and releasing a CD on our own. By the time this thing came out, the songs were years old and we had already turned a corner as a band, finally finding ourselves with the writing of "Joe Lies" (our self-proclaimed "first good song"), among others, and wanted nothing to do with these weird old songs. Only 1,000 copies were pressed, most of them selling right away at the release party at Trenton's legendary City Gardens. We sold the remainder on our first U.S. tour (with our fellow New Brunswick punks and new friends, Lifetime), and decided never to re-press it. We even went so far as to start recording over the master copy to save money. Despite the demand, we thought is best that the world not be exposed to such sonic lameness. Had it not been for K8, we would never have re-released it; but it is hard to say no to K8 when she asks us all sweet and stuff."

Alkaline Trio's Broken Wing EP is up

Alkaline Trio's Broken wing EP released on the same day as the bands ninth studio album, My Shame Is True on April 2, 2013 through Epitaph Records' Heart & Skull.

This EP is all about Dan Andriano though, and it makes sense why. Where My Shame Is True boasted some of his dullest writing to date, Broken Wing contrasts that in every sense of the word.

Alkaline Trio EP are about thoughtful, heartfelt songs, shaded with love, angst, confusion and hopefulness. Broken Wing represents the mature, natural evolution the band have been working toward, without sacrificing creativity or sounding too contrived.

In every aspect, this EP is probably some of their best work ever. It proves that they can progress and evolve without losing their ability to produce catchy, unique and identifiable punk rock.
